Thomas Kern (b. 1965). While training as a photographer in Zurich, Thomas Kern worked for several studios in the fields of fashion, specialist and industrial photography. From 1989 he operated exclusively as a roving photographic reporter. He co-founded the Swiss Lookat Photos photographic agency in 1990. For many years a central theme of his work has been the effects of war and conflict on the everyday lives of those involved, for example in Northern Ireland, Kurdistan, Haiti and the former Yugoslavia. He lived as a free-lance photographer in San Francisco from 1998 to 2006, and after that back in Switzerland.
